Factory Brake Controller Fault Issues On a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500

Question:

I was getting the”service trailer brake system “ warning, did some research on line and decided to change the trailer brake module that is under the bed, twice. Both times it fixed the problem and the brakes on the camper worked again. Both times the module failed with just moving the camper in and out of the barn. Each time it was on a different trail.

It sounds like there is an issue with factory integrated trailer brake controller (ITBC) system on your 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 which is causing damage to the module. Unfortunately, troubleshooting would need to done by the dealer which as I am sure you know can get very expensive. Therefore, a better option for you would be to bypass the factory integrated trailer brake controller in light of an aftermarket brake controller which will perform much better. For this, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller part # RED44FR which will be most similar to a factory brake controller in regards to installation since you are only going to have a control knob mounted on the dash. Furthermore, the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite has both proportional and user controlled braking modes so you will have complete and total control of the trailer no matter the circumstance.

I have attached a help article on how to bypass the factory integrated trailer brake controller. Please note, there will be some differences in the exact process but nonetheless it can be used as a guide.
