Troubleshooting Intermittent Running Light Failure on 2017 5th Wheel Trailer
Updated 03/14/2020 | Published 03/13/2020 >
Question:
I have a 2017 5th wheel. The turn signal lights work fine, brake lights fine and tail lights work. The running lights will work for a few seconds then go off. Will come on again after awhile but go off after a few seconds. Suggestions on how to locate my problem.

I'll start off by saying that this could be as simple as a ground wire issue, so you'll want to make sure that the trailer end of the plug is grounded properly to a paint and rust free spot on your trailer and that it is secured tightly.
If this doesn't correct the issue you'll need to locate the running light circuit on your trailer's 7 way connection, which when looking at the plug's socket, will be in the 11 o'clock position. From there, I would first make sure that the pin/blade on that socket is corrosion, dirt and debris free; if there are green or white spots on the blade you'll want to clean it off as best as you can. If that doesn't work or there is no corrosion present, you'll want to trace that wire back on the trailer, checking along the way for wires that might be damaged or pinched and in contact with the frame of the trailer. You'll want to replace any damaged wires along the way.
You can also check your vehicle's 7 way plug to make sure that it is functioning correctly using a circuit tester like the # PTW2993, in order to make sure that the issue is not on the vehicle. If you're finding that this circuit is going in and out of power, the issue will be on your vehicle and you'll want to check the wiring on your vehicle's 7 way and replace any damaged wires there.
If these steps don't correct your issue, please let me know and I will continue to help you troubleshoot the issues with your running lights. I've also linked a helpful article that you may want to have a look at as well, and will provide you with a wiring diagram for your plug and socket.
