I took a look at the online copy of the owner's manual of a 2011 Ford Explorer and it said that either the front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive model can be flat towed, but a drive-train disconnect was not mentioned. It did have specific steps you need to take, and I recommend checking that out in your copy; in the online manual the directions were on page 263 (under "Recreational Towing"). Here are all the parts you need to flat tow a 2011 Ford Explorer.
- Base Plate Kit: Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # 4427-3A
- Tow Bar: Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-522
- Safety Chains: Roadmaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables # RM-643
- Wiring Kit: Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267
- Supplemental Braking System: Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # SM99251 with Brake-Lite Relay # RM-88400
OR
- For a motorhome with air brakes: Air Force One Supplemental Braking System for Motorhomes with Air Brakes # SM99243
You may also need a high-low adapter in order to keep your 2011 Ford Explorer level, and I've added a link to a help article which shows you how to determine if you need an adapter, as well as a link to our selection of adapters. Additionally, I have added links to instruction manuals, video reviews and installations for you to take a look at.
