Question:
Hello I’m looking for a hitch for a bike rack and I needed to know what class hitch I should get. I have a 2019 Subaru Forrester. How much does this hitch weigh? For 2 or 3 bikes can I do a class 1 hitch? Thank you

Expert Reply:
The maximum tongue weight capacity for the 2019 Subaru Forester is 150 lbs so even with a higher capacity hitch, you are stil limited to that total weight of bike carrier and your bikes themselves so that is a key consideration.
Yes, you can use a Class I or Class II hitch but you are ultimately limited to the maximum tongue weight the Forester. A Class II would not be recommended to be clear. The net weight of the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C12198 is 30lbs.
A bike rack like the Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Platform Rack # KU24FR weighs 51lbs so you could still carry 3 bikes of 30lbs each as an example.
