Question:

What maximum tire size width can this rack accommodate. We have some 2.8inch width tire bikes and some 5inch fat tire bikes. Configuration wise, Is it possible to transport 2 bikes on this door mounted thule rack in conjunction with transporting 2 additional bikes on a hitch mounted bike rack like the Saris MTR 2 or thule t2 pro? Wed like to transport our two adult bikes and 2 kids bikes.

The Thule Elite Van XT 2 Bike Rack for Sprinter Rear Door # TH302043 does not have the ability to carry fat tires that are 5 inches in width. But it is carried high enough that you could carry two of your non-fat bikes on it and then use a hitch mounted rack like the Thule T2 Pro XTR part # TH83JV like you mentioned for the fat bike(s) as needed.

In the attached picture you can see that the Elite Van Rack holds the bikes up high enough that a hitch rack would easily fit underneath it.
