Question:
I have a Dexter P-12 SLR axle, SN 0 8002712. This axle is from a two-place motorcycle trailer. I believe the weight rating for the axle is 3000#. One of the axle spindles, along with the hub and bearing assemblies, has been damaged. Are there replacements or a kit for these damaged parts spindle, bearings, hub, hub backing plate? If not, can you suggest an appropriate replacement for the whole axle assembly? Manufactures part numbers found: - Hub: 8-258 - Torsion arm: 89-48 A2 or 69-46 A2 difficulty reading casting - no numbers for the actual spindle, bearings or hub backing plate could be found. Photos have been attached. Thanks for the help.

Based on the 8-258 Dexter hubs that were used on the axle, our part # 8-258-5UC1 or # 8-258-5UC1-EZ, the axle itself most likely has a 2,000-2,200 pound weight capacity. The spindle that's compatible with this size hub is the BTR E-Z Lube Spindle for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles - 1-1/4" Diameter # TRU44FR. I highly recommend measuring your existing spindle and comparing it to the dimensions listed on the product page.
With that being said, even if these are compatible as replacement parts, it's still going to be easier to replace the entire axle altogether. This is because welding on a new spindle is a pretty intensive project and should only be done by a certified professional with experience in this type of installation. Since there was noticeable damage to one of the spindles and hubs, it's also possible there are some other damaged portions that on the axle that could go unnoticed until it's too late. A brand new axle would eliminate these concerns.
We don't have any standard torsion axles like these available but what you could go with is a Timbren Axle-Less System. For a 2,000 pound system the Timbren # A20RS545, which includes the spindles and idler hub assemblies, will work perfectly. These independent units simply get bolted to the trailer frame so they can fit any frame width and typically eliminate the need for a thru-axle altogether. The AEON progressive-rate main springs allow for a really smooth ride during travel as well.
I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out, along with a link that will take you to our complete selection of Axle-Less Systems that you can look through.
