Question:

I am looking for a winch to raise and lower my roof top carrier to the ceiling in my garage. Can this winch be used with rope? Can it be mounted to a wall?

If you need to raise and lower your cargo box on and off the vehicle then I recommend the Thule MultiLift Cargo Lift and Storage System part # TH572 which is designed specifically for this purpose. This is an all-in-one kit that comes with everything that you need.

The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL10952 cannot be used with a synthetic rope as they have been known to jam the reel and drive gears together. This will be the case for most worm gear winches as well so the above is really your best solution.
