Question:

Replacing ties on a dual axle E Z loader boat trailer. Boat weight is 4100 lbs. Current dry rotted tires are H78x14. What size and load rated tires are needed? Does number of axles play into load rating of the tires?

We have the exact tires that you need to replace your old dry-rotted tires, but to answer your last question, the number of axles (and therefore the number of tires) does play into load rating. Each tire has its own rating, and the way it works is the total capacity is the combined total of the capacity for each tire - so for a tandem axle trailer, you simple combine the load capacity of all four tires to get their total weight capacity.

The correct replacement size for H78-14 tires is ST215/75-14 and we have a pair of great options for you.

Though you mentioned your boat weighs 4,100 lbs, the determining factor in the load capacity you need will be your trailer's GVWR - this is the maximum your trailer will weigh when loaded. You will need to get tires that meet or exceed that GVWR, which is something you can often find on a sticker on the trailer tongue.

I recommend the Provider ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tires because of their deep 10/32" tread depth as well as their tread bars so not only will these tires give you outstanding grip but it will be very easy to tell how much wear they have accumulated.

These tires come in load range C and load range D: If your trailer has a GVWR between 7,480 lbs and 8,800 lbs you will need the Provider ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range D # TTWTRTM2157514D which has a maximum capacity of 2,200 lbs per tire when it is inflated to its max 65 psi.

If your trailer has a GVWR of less than 7,480 lbs you will need the Provider ST215/75R14 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # TTWTR21514 which has a maximum capacity of 1,870 lbs per tire when it is inflated to its max 50 psi.
