Question:
Just purchased a 2008 Jeep Commander. Do not know where to plug in the brake controller? Does it have a plug or does it need to be wired. Do I need a new controller given all the changes with Electronic Sway Control and the Electronic Stability Program?

A brake controller will have no effect on your vehicle's Electronic Sway Control and the Electronic Stability Program. Any brake controller will work with your vehicle and will need to be hardwired in to the existing wiring on the vehicle.
If your vehicle does not already have a 4-pole wiring harness located a the back of your vehicle, you would need to purchase the following parts: A T-Connector part number 118408, a Brake Controller Installation Kit, part number ETBC7, and a brake controller. I would recommend a Proportional brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 part # 90885 which is one of our all-time best selling brake controllers.
Some Commander models were equipped with a factory 7-way trailer connector. If this is the case, the output circuit will have already been ran from under the dash back to the 7-way. Look for a coiled up light blue or light green wire located near the firewall behind the emergency brake near the firewall or behind the kick plate next to where the driver's left foot would be. The wire would typically have a tag on it that reads Electric Trailer Brake. If that's how your Commander is equipped, you'd need to use a # 5506 install kit.
