The best way to transport your bikes is with a trailer hitch and hitch mounted bike rack. However, if you are only going to transport the bikes a few times a year then a trunk mounted bike rack will suffice. The advantages of a trailer hitch and hitch mounted bike rack however are that they will be easier to load the bikes onto, there won't be any adapters required most likely in order to carry the kids bikes, there is no surface contact, and the trailer hitch can serve many other purposes such as towing a trailer or carrying a cargo carrier.
For a trailer hitch and hitch mounted bike rack, I recommend the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver part # E98868 with the Kuat Transfer 3 Bike Platform Rack part # KU24FR. The etrailer.com hitch is a custom fit so no drilling is required and the Kuat Transfer is a very nice bike rack that will work just fine with your kids bikes without any adapters needed.
For a trunk mounted bike rack, I really like the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 3 Bike Rack for Vehicles w/ Spoilers part # HRF2-3 because it's design ensures there is no downward pressure on the vehicle's rear spoiler so you don't really have to worry about any damage to the vehicle save for a few scuffs from the mounting feet. Please note that in order to keep the kid's bike level you will most likely need to use the Hollywood Racks Bike Frame Adapter Bar part # HRBA-PRO for each.
I have attached review videos on these option for you as well.
