Can the Wheel Trays Be Removed on the Yakima FourTimer 4 Bike Platform Rack

Question:

Do the adjustable platforms where the wheels sit on the Yakima Holdup slide all the way off? I see the rack has a hitch lock pin, but am curious if we are out on trails if those platforms could be untightened, slid off and stolen? Best I can tell from the pictures that appears to be the case. Looking for a four bike platform rack that is secure. doesnt have to have built in bike locks since I can lock the bikes with seperate bike locks. Thanks.

Yes, the wheel trays can be slid off the Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Platform Rack part # Y0443-2. However, this would not be able to be done with a bike attached as the bike would put downward pressure on the wheel tray which would then prevent them from sliding off with a bike sitting atop.

The majority of bike racks will have removable wheel trays but more often than not, a thief is not going to think to remove them. When it comes down to it, there isn't a bike rack on the market that is completely theft proof. If the thief is determined enough and has the right tools/time then he will get your bike(s) most likely. However, the mere presence of a lock will be enough to deter most thieves.
