Question:

I have a 1998 Toyota 4runner that is capable of towing 5000lbs with 500 tongue weight. However, the manual says it is a weight carrying hitch only and not recommended for weight distribution hitch. So my question is, what are my options? Am I stuck with towing trailers much shorter and lighter or can I actually use a WDH? Thanks a bunch!

According to my research, the 1998 4Runner had a 5000 lb towing capacity. On some vehicles, adding a weight distribution system can add additional capacity to the hitch itself, but the tow rating of the vehicle itself will always be the final word. In other words, adding a weight distribution system to your 4Runner would not gain you any more towing capacity.

Although I wold love to sell you a weight distribution system, I cannot recommend exceeding the manufacturers stated tow rating for your vehicle, nor can I recommend anything that would contradict their recommendations regarding using a weight distribution system with the existing hitch.

You can help combat trailer sway and some of the squat experienced when the trailer is attached. A friction sway control system, like part # 83660 would help to resist trailer sway. You would also need a sway control bracket, part # RP26003.

The Timbren Suspension Enhancement System, part # TTOR4R will help eliminate some of the squat in the rear end of your 4Runner.
