How Much Voltage Drop Is There With the Mighty Cord 50 RV Power Cord Extension A10-5050EH
Updated 11/26/2018 | Published 11/22/2018 >
Question:
Need to use to extend current 50 foot 50 amp shore power line. What kind of voltage is expected with the additional 50 feet and plug contact resistance? Also will be using in winter rain environment. What kind of protection is there for the plug connection? Can it lay on the ground in puddles safely? If not, what is recommended solution? I have seen moisture protectors at home building supply stores for 15 amp household extension cords but dont know if similar exists for 50 amp plug connections.

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Mighty Cord 50' RV Power Cord Extension part # A10-5050EH will likely reduce the voltage around 1.98 volts which is around 1.65%. The total voltage drop with a 100' extension like what you would have should be around 3.95 volts which is around 3.29%. Please note that these results are based on normal conditions and can vary depending on the condition of wires, type of conduit, temperature etc...
I cannot recommend you lay the power cord in a puddle of water for obvious reasons but it is water resistant and can be used in the rain according to the manufacturer. I can almost guarantee you will not find a power cord who's manufacturer states it can be submerged in a puddle. I recommend just propping the connection point off the ground as we don't have a single 100' long 50 amp power cord.
