SmartPlug vs. Twist Lock

RV and boat owners have long relied on Twist Lock style connections for powering their rides. For years, it has been the best option for connecting to shore power. It's been reliable, but most know it's not without disadvantages:

Twist-Type Design Problems

  • Curved pins make minimal surface contact, increasing the amount of heat generated
  • Locking ring can be prone to breaking, cross threading, and stripping out
  • Faulty locking ring puts strain on the connection
  • Wear and debris can loosen the fit, further decreasing surface contact
  • Circular plug shape isn't user friendly and takes some awareness of the orientation of the pins to insert correctly

SmartPlug's connector addresses each of these concerns and does all of the heavy lifting.

Locking arms grab the inlet, a clamp inside the plug body holds the cord, the inlet cap snaps to the top while in use, and the integrated seals weatherproof the connection. This helps prevent the wiggly, dirty connections that increase electrical resistance, which creates potentially dangerous heat.

Since it uses a square plug face, SmartPlug is able to use flat pins which create far more surface contact, further reducing the risk of high heat and electrical arcing. The square shape and flat pins also make it easy to plug in - no more twisting or guessing if the pins are lined up correctly.

I found the installation of the inlet easy and the modification of the connector very easy. The instructions were very easy to follow and very comprehensive.

The only issue was the rear cover (pictured) for the inlet could not fit at the front location of may 2019 Airstream Flying Cloud 27 ft. FB. I also installed the cable port.

by:

Was a little tight but lubed inside the plug holes and works great now.

by:

This is one of the best engineered products I have purchased in a long time. The quality is excellent with clear easy to understand instructions. Highly recommend Smart plug products.

by:

Well instead of part number sm67fr I was sent b30assynt I guess that's the upgraded part. But this was 2nd b30assynt that the d rings didn't open enough to except 10 gauge strand . Had to flie d rings some and plastic cover. Will see how long it lasts. It did come in time from e trailer.

by:

better than the stock 50 amp connector. Cutting and fitting 8awg wire was the hardest part to fit into the plug. The rest was easy.

by:

It is so easy and quick to hook up power when arriving at the campground. Just as easy to disconnect. Had 2 days of rain, just over an inch, and no issues with water intrusion. My wife used it for the first time and said is that it! Yes, it is expensive, but worth it.

by:

Easy to install, very firm connection to trailer. Much, much better than the old twist-on 30 amp plug and inlet

by:

Product appears to be of excellent quality and very sturdy. If only the RV manufacturers would install these at the factory. I will be installing this over the weekend.

by:

I just installed the smart plug on my Airstream this morning. It was very straightforward with the instructions. This new smart plug is easier to deal with when you are attaching it to the cable with the way the lock nut holds the cable in place going into the back of the plug. That was a pleasant surprise. I like the new design. Pleased so far!

by:

I like this way more than the old twist one. Like the 2 levers on the sides that lock it in. Color coded for simple hook up, made my own 15/20amp dog bone in addition to my 50amp. Not looking back.

by:

The installation and instructions were straightforward on this plug. Very happy with e-trailer shipping as well. Always on time and the package always looks good when arrives. The trailer you know what you're doing. Definitely keep up the awesome work.

by:

This is the exact part I needed to replace the original Smart Plug receptacle on my 2023 Basecamp 16x (which became damaged due to a loose wire). Customer support, price, and shipping speed from etrailer was great. I will say the new rear cover on this item was a little tricky to install, but it was doable with a little patience.

by:

This Smart plug inlet plug is true to size. I've used the Smart Plug system on other RVs and am familiar with the better contact area. I was delighted to see that this plug fit inside the connection center of my campervan, and still be able to close cover with no bulging.

by:

I thought this was rather expensive until I received it. Very well built and so much more solid than the plastic one that came on my 5th wheel. My only complaint is that I wish there were an option for a 90-degree bend so the cord would hang from the plug rather than stick straight out. The weight of the 50AMP cord may cause an issue over time, but we will have to wait and see. My old connector was at 90 degrees, and it appears they offer this in the 30AMP option.

by:

Easy to install and so much better of a system to hook up power, plug and go. Highly recommend the Smart Plug for safety and ease of use, plus looks good too.

by:

This was so easy to install. I am so glad I changed my RV over to this plug and cord. Fit perfectly and the cord is flexible. I would encourage everyone to change out from the old setup.

by:

Can’t wait to complete my conversion to the SmartPlug. Good to know etrailor s there aren’t f I need help
With the install.

I'm giving this Smartplug cord and the Smartplug male trailer wall socket a 4-star rating, but not because the product isn't EXCELLENT. IT IS! On this 2-week camping outing, we have nearly lost our 37-ft. Rockwood Signature travel trailer TWICE to fire, due to the common, everyday 'Twist LOC" RV socket and matching cord overheating while operating our 50-amp trailer on 30 amps (coming between 2-3 amps of 30 amps, but not OVER 30 amps.) The standard 50 amp female power cord end and male plug installed into the side of the trailer MELTED while running on 30-amp service, drawing 26 to 28 amps continuous when both A/Cs were cycled on at the same time. Neither the cord itself nor the trailer's power feed cable ever got hot--ONLY THE CONNECTION where the power cord and trailer plug MEET. It nearly started a fire in the rear wall of our trailer. Melted wall insulation, charred the edges of the fiberglass siding and nearly burned the underlayment underneath the skin. Fortunately, it was NOT a wood product. Both the female cord end and the wall connector plug were melted and charred. Both were replaced by the mobile RV tech who does all of our RV work (I am disabled.) The new cord and trailer plug then melted again 24 hours later. I ordered this Smartplug cord and trailer plug from Etrailer and got it in 4 days. Since new Smartplug cord & plug were installed, I am still pulling 25-28 amps when both A/C compressors are running, but I can feel very little heat on the outside or inside (where the trailer wiring is run into the wall), and the highest temperature I've recorded with the laser temperature gun is 102.5 degrees (high air temperature has been 95 degrees). PROBLEM SOLVED!! The only reason I gave these Smartplug items 4 stars is because of their COST!! The 30ft. Smartplug trailer cord and accompanying male trailer wall socket cost me $718!!! That's pretty close to RIDICULOUS!! They DID, however, SOLVE MY OVERHEATING WIRING CONNECTION PROBLEM!! Read the Smartplug ads and watch their YouTube video from eTrailer (can be reached on eTrailer's website). THEY AREN'T LYING!! Smartplug saved our very expensive RV!!

by:

awesome product, highly recommend, etrailer has been great through the whole processit took about 45 minutes to install as my 5yr. old great grandson was helping me,

by:

The quality and design is fantastic. The cover feels soild not flimsy or cheap. Easy install . Have not taken it out yet but looking forward to going out and not dealing with the threaded ring that never felt secure.

Glad you like it, Dwain! These are definitely nicer than the screw in style connectors. What did you install it on?

  • 2 Holes Stripped Out When Installing SmartPlug RV Power Inlet 50A Hookup On Travel Trailer
Hey Mike, thanks for your continued business, and sorry for your troubles. The SmartPlug RV Power Inlet - 50 Amp - Black # SM56FR just has pass through holes so the part itself isn't stripped, so you'll need to focus more on the RV wall side of things if that makes sense. That is where the bolt holes are that are getting stripped or too large so that the screws aren't staying in. A few solutions come to mind. One solution, which is probably the best, is to use some wood filler or some...

  • Does etrailer Offer Any RV Power Cords Made In The United States
Yes, the SmartPlug line of power cords and all of their other accessories are all made here in the United States. Since you have a 2018 Airstream Flying Cloud Travel Trailer you'll most likely want the stainless steel inlet # SM79FR, but we also have a few other color options if you'd like: Black # SM56FR White # SM89FR Gray # SM29FR

  • 90 Degree Angled SmartPlug Connector For Inlet
Hi George, That’s a great question. The SmartPlug RV power inlet kits only come with straight connectors there isn’t a 90 degree connector sold separately by itself. The only 50 amp 90 degree angled cord SmartPlug currently offers is part # SM54SB. If you wanted to go that route, you could pair it with the SmartPlug 50 Amp Power Inlet in black, part # SM56FR. If your main concern is stress on the inlet, SmartPlug systems are actually designed to reduce that. Unlike traditional twist-lock...

  • Where Are Mighty Cord Power Cords Made?
The Mighty Cord RV Power Cord # A10-5025ED90 is made in China. Don't let this discourage you though. This is a well built and sturdy power cord and I have not had any issues with their products brought to my attention. That said, if you are looking for American made products, we do have the SmartPlug line available. The SmartPlug RV Power Cord # SM86FR would be the most similar to the Mighty Cord you were looking at, but SmartPlug uses a proprietary male port so you would also need to...

  • Power Inlet Needed To Add Shore Power To An Enclosed Trailer
If you're only wanting to setup AC service in your enclosed trailer then you could choose pretty much any 30 or 50 amp power inlet you wanted and then just run the appropriate gauge wire between the inlet and your panel. You can definitely install a 50 amp inlet and then just use a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter whenever you're at a site with only 30 amp service. You could use the Mighty Cord Replacement RV Power Inlet - White # A10-50INVP or # A10-50INBKVP for black. You'd need a minimum of...
