Follow-up. If I upgraded everything to 12v, I would not need the 6v at all. Could still change gen.,coil,reg,bulbs,wiper motor,gauges etc. etc and leave engine in car with 6v starter and flywheelfoot and replace 6v starter every time it eventually/if/when it gives up the ghost. ______________________________________________________________________________ * Follow up QUESTION ~ with two 6s in seriesfoot // hooked up to 12v in parallel.... IF I TAP JUST ONE 6V BATTERY - VOLTAGE WILL BE 12 VOLToff of the one 6 v. ??? ??? not 6 volt off of one in the series, not of the two.?? ?? ?? ...... checking. Y/N * * Follow-up QUESTIONClarify please This SOUNDS like I could hook ONE 12v in parallel with ONE 6v . If, I put a backflow diode and a fuse on the wire/line between the +6v and the +12v. Then I run car off the orig. 6v. and in car accessories off the 12v. .... and the 12 will get charged to the 6v limit? ,, and every so often I would charge the 12v deep cycle back up to 12 // using only 1- 6 and 1- 12 /// no need for a second 6v battery ?? ?? ?? or did I make mistake in understanding... If I am understanding correctly you want to run two 6 volt batteries in series to get your 12V output. This will work well and allow you to also run a 12V battery with those two 6V batteries, when you then connect the output power 12V of the two 6V batteries in parallel with your 12V battery.

The issue you will have is separating the 6V you need for your kit car. A 12V battery can start a 6V starter with precautions, but the issue would be the constant 12V power going to your light bulbs, gauges, alternator, etc. with that setup. If you upgrade your car to all 12V then that will work great.

To keep your car and all vehicle components at 6V and still utilize a 12V battery as well, you can use wire like # 10-1-1 sold by the foot and Roadmaster Single Park Light Diode # RM-690 to keep the 6V battery from a negative draw or having a backflow that could harm your vehicle. You will then use an inline circuit breaker like # 9510 after that diode to connect the positive terminal of your 6V battery to a deep cycle 12V battery. This will very slowly charge your 12V battery. Then if/when you need to supplement charge to your 12V battery you can use a standard 12V charger like the CTEK # CTEK56353 on only that battery.

Let me take the follow up questions in order... If you upgraded everything to 12V you would not need the 6V at all. You would need to upgrade bulbs, gauges, alternator, etc. for that compatibility. The 6V starter would work but you would want to turn everything on and then hit the start to not give it the full power battery Then you can simply replace the starter when needed. If you connect two 6V batteries in series and a 12V in parallel and tap just one of the 6V batteries, you would still be getting 12V power off the 6V battery power terminal. If you put a diode or backflow preventer on your 6V battery, then you could use the 6V battery in your car without updating anything with the vehicle components and then use your charging connection to a 12V battery to run all your 12V components. Your 6V alternator will not provide enough charge to maintain your 12V battery completely so you would need to charge it from an AC source as necessary. The benefit is you don't need to upgrade your kit car, the down side is it will not be a self-sustaining system and alternative charging from an AC charger will be needed.
