Question:
we have a '12 fortwo and are about to take delivery of a Class A motorhome. we've been doing research on what we need to be safe and to tow legally and we'd like your recommendations since there are so many product choices out there. the RV forums seem to cause more confusion, not less. we want to do it right the first time.

We can help you get set up for safely towing your 2012 Smart fortwo behind your motorhome.
A number of items are needed and you can read up on all by referring to the flat towing overview article I linked for you. I also included additional helpful articles on several of these specific components which include a tow bar, safety cables, base plates, a wiring kit, a supplemental braking system and also a high/low hitch adapter.
Starting with base plates for the fortwo, I suggest the Roadmaster EZ base plate # 52285-1 since it uses a twist-lock method to secure the two arms; there are no pins that can break or get lost. With this base plate you can use their Sterling All Terrain tow bar # RM-576 which will store on your motorhome. I recommend this tow bar because it includes the required safety cables and wiring, and its extra-long arms mean less chance of binding when you make turns. The linked video highlights the Sterling's features. I recommend protecting the tow bar with cover # RM-055-3.
You'll also use a battery disconnect kit # RM-766 to keep the fortwo's battery from running down. Wiring diode kit # RM-152 will complete the electrical setup.
You will also need a braking system to engage the fortwo's brakes when you are slowing the motorhome. For this I suggest the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 because once it is installed you will not have to do any additional setup each time you tow. You will also need seat adapter # SM99602 and Stop Light Switch kit # RM-751437 for proper brake operation.
To maintain the fortwo's battery while you're towing you will use Charge Line kit # RM-156-25 which will deliver a trickle charge to keep the battery topped off.
A high/low hitch adapter like # RM-076, one of those shown on the linked page, will keep your Sterling tow bar level for the best possible operation. You can refer to the included article to help you select the right one.
I recommend use of the Roadmaster Tow Defender Protective Screen # RM-4750 and Rock Guard # RM-4000 to prevent road debris like pebbles from making their mark on the fortwo's hood and windshield. These work great with the Sterling tow bar and will spare the fortwo from suffering damage while you're touring.
