Question:

I am a long time owner of Yakima roof racks but need a bike rack for my wifes equinox and it says the Thule Gateway will fit her car. Will it fit as I am concerned about other buyers experiencing dents in their vehicles from the Gateway?

The Thule Gateway Pro Bike Rack part # TH88VR for two bikes or part # TH78VR for three bikes is indeed a confirmed fit for your wife's 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. They have foam pads to protect the vehicle's finish, anti-sway cradles to prevent bike to bike/bike to vehicle contact and a six point anchor system to keep everything in place.

I have seen a few of the reviews you were referring to but I can say that these instances most likely result from not following the specific install instructions for the vehicle which for you are as follows:

Place top clips in the gap at the front edge of the top of the trunk, hatch or door.
Set lower clip/hooks into frame holes in chassis behind bumper.
Lower arm of carrier will rest in the bottom of the license plate well.

So long as you follow these specific instructions the Gateway XT should not dent or damaged the surface on your wife's Equinox. If you notice, the majority of the reviews which I can only assume where the ones that followed the specific instructions, gave great feedback. I have attached a test course video of the bike rack for you as well though it is not on an Equinox.
