Recommended Taskmaster G-Rated Special Trailer Tire in Size ST235/85-16

Updated 06/27/2018 | Published 06/25/2018

Question:

Hello - We have a 2017 Keystone Avalanche 5th wheel trailer that weighs just over 13k pounds dry. We had the lovely experience of blowing out a tire on the interstate coming home yesterday. Im very OCD about checking air pressure, and aired them up to 80psi before we left. The blowout caused alot of collateral damage at 72 mph on the interstate, and Im lookiing to avoid this scenario again! Trailer currently has 235 80 16 tires, with an E load rating. The brand is something King, cant remember exactly. Can you recommend a load rating and brand so that I minimize the chance of this happening again? Thank you!

I am sorry about your 'white-knuckle' tire blowout on the interstate. I can help you select new tires that can help avoid a repeat of this awful experience.

Your tire size ST235/80-16 has an overall diameter of just under 31-inches. The slightly larger size ST235/85-16 will fit on your same rims but in this size you have the options of a Load Range F tire, which offers nearly 500-lbs more capacity (more safety margin) per tire than the E-rated size ST235/80-16, and even a G-rated tire such as Taskmaster Provider # TTWPRG235R16 which has a 4400-lb capacity per tire. This tire also has an M speed rating, meaning it is rated for highway speeds up to 81-mph. This is the tire I suggest for you along with high-pressure valve stem # AM20906.

The root cause for a blowout (other than outright physical damage from road debris) is usually heat. Tires develop excess heat for one or more of three main reasons. Those reasons are incorrect inflation, overloading beyond rated weight capacity and operating the tire at a speed faster than its rating.
