Fuse Locations for 7-Way Connector on 2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn

Updated 08/14/2025 | Published 06/22/2018

Question:

By any chance would you know where the fuse is located for the 7 pin on a 2016 Dodge Ram 1500 big horn ?

I took a look at the online version of the owner's manual for your 2016 Ram 1500. There should be a 30 amp pink fuse located in the F30 position inside the power distribution center. This fuse is specifically for the "Trailer Tow Receptacle". Make sure this fuse is present and in good condition.

Additional fuse locations related to the 7-Way and trailer towing on your 2016 Ram are as follows:

F11 (30 amp pink) - Integrated Trailer Brake Module
F28 (20 amp blue) - Trailer Backup Lights
F29 (20 amp blue) - Trailer Parking Lights
F53 (20 amp yellow micro fuse) - Trailer Tow L Turn/Stop
F81 (20 amp yellow micro fuse) - Trailer Tow R Turn/Stop

I was checking the trailer electric at the plug with a test light. I accidentally touched the negative to the running light pin. Half a second... a little smoke... and now no running lights on my trailer. Fuse 29 is NOT blown. I took the fuse out and replaced it... Still not working. I put the test light on the terminals in fuse 29 and have NO power there.... HELP

If you don't have any power coming into that fuse, then it honestly might be time to bring the truck up to a mechanic or the dealer. I wasn't able to find any corresponding relays in the owner's manual for that circuit, although you might want to check your copy to be sure - that would be the only other place I can think of to look.

There's likely some kind of interruption on the brake output circuit. Inspect the 7-Way connector at the bumper and look for any debris or corrosion that needs to be cleaned out of the pins. Do the same on the trailer side. Whatever wiring you can access behind the 7-Way - check for any damaged, pinched, exposed portions that need to be replaced.

Thanks in advance for your help. My wiring harness was partially cut when backing up with a severe jacknife. Immediately the reverse camera lost signal. The signals and brakes still work. Not the parking/running lights. I noticed the white/ground wire was damaged and have since repaired it with a butt connector and tested all wires for continuity. With a multimeter at the female plug end to each individual wire at the area of damage. All zeroed out. Good! My 7 pin socket has 12v power at positions 1:positive-black/4:negative-white and 3:blue-brakes. There seems to be some variation in the wire colours for each purpose but I think I'm on track. Only reading about 1+/- at 2:right and 5:left signals and 6:parking/running lights. It's an rv trailer and doesn't have reverse lights but 7: center pin only reads less than 1. I pulled the fuses you mention and they seem to be ok. Any ideas or just bute the bullet and get a new wiring harness?

@ScottR Hey Scott! This doesn't sound like the most fun time in the world. So it makes sense that the camera stopped working since I assume it's being fed by the running/parking lights circuit. When you say that the harness was partially cut, was it just that white ground wire that was damaged? Is this a factory harness or an aftermarket one you installed?

@ChrisR Thanks for your reply. The white/ground was the worst of the lot. It is a factory tow kit. I agree the brown or green wire does double duty with the camera. Since the 7 wires had continuity but 2 (signal and running/parking light) terminals weren't reading close to 12 I moved on to fuses as suggested. in my Ram 1500 there are; 2 x 20 micro-fuses F28=tow B/U, (back up) F29=tow park (lights) 1 x 30 micro-fuse F30=tow (?) 2 x 20 regular style F53=left, turn/stop F81=right Visually all the fuses looked fine. (I never checked F11 but truck recognized the trailer brakes when connected so...) My tester probes would not fit in the fuse. So I removed and swapped the 2 20s and checked the lights again. Nothing. A friend with the right tools was able to test the fuses and found BOTH were burnt out. So I bought 2 new fuses. Since I don't have backup/reverse lights I replaced F29, the one labelled PARK and presto the lights work. We figure the wiring was "pinched" and the ground/white and the brown or green(still not sure) must have rubbed together, shorting the system. Sorry for the length of the post but I has been a good learning experience and hope it will help someone just as your original reply to Trevor about the fuses. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer.

@ScottR Heck yeah! I'm glad you were able to get it figured out and I REALLY appreciate you sharing your story - it can be super valuable for others reading. A pinched or damaged wire can definitely cause a short that blows a couple of fuses, so all of it makes sense. If anything else comes up you know where to find me.
