Question:
Hi I have a 2012 Mazda cx9 w/o towing package. Will the towing capacity change if we add towing additions/ equipment? Looking to purchase a 2000# pop up camper. Thanks

The towing capacity of any vehicle is determined by the auto maker and generally does not increase from adding aftermarket parts. Yes, adding a transmission cooler to a vehicle that will be towing will certainly reduce thermal stress on that particular vehicle system but this does not mean that any given vehicle can tow more weight just because you add such a cooler.
I checked the online edition of the owner's manual for the 2012 Mazda CX-9 and on page 4-15 the manual notes the highest trailer weight allowed for the non-tow-package version of the CX-9 is 2000-lbs. The table with this information also includes the GCWR or gross combined weight rating, which is the most the vehicle and trailer together can weigh, with all passengers and cargo accounted for. This will vary depending on whether the car is 2WD or AWD (all wheel drive).
Other important information on towing is included in the following pages so I recommend checking your printed manual to ensure you have all the information needed to tow safely. Naturally it is better not to use a vehicle right near its limits. Keep in mind that a trailer that weighs 2000-lbs when empty could weigh a good bit more when loaded.
There are two sizes and classes of hitch made for your CX-9, a 1-1/4-inch Class II and a 2-inch Class III type like Curt # 13575 or Draw-Tite # 75531. I urge you to choose a 2-inch hitch since it will have better compatibility with hitch-mounted accessories.
