Recommended Trailer Hitch for Bike Rack on 2009 Honda CR-V

Updated 07/06/2020 | Published 03/23/2018

Question:

Which of the 3 Class I Honda CRV trailer hitches do you recommend and why? Will only be used with a 2 bike Thule carrier. Need 1 1/4 hitch. Thanks

The three Class I trailer hitches available that are confirmed to fit your 2009 Honda CR-V all feature an almost identical design and they will all install at the same location on the vehicle's frame. All three hitches have the same 200 pound tongue weight capacity and will provide you with a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening.

Between these options, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver # 24792. This is simply because unlike Curt, Draw-Tite does not require the use of additional stabilizing straps when using the hitch for non-trailer loads like bike racks and cargo carriers. These straps can be a bit of a hassle to use, and since this will be your primary application, going with the Draw-Tite model is your best option.

I have attached an installation video on your vehicle that you can use for reference.

It sounds like you may already have a bike rack, but you will just want to make sure that it or the one you choose is compatible with Class I trailer hitches. Also note that the trailer hitches for your CR-V are pretty recessed behind the rear bumper when installed. When we installed the Draw-Tite hitch on your vehicle, we measured a distance of 7 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the rear bumper. This particular dimension is important when considering a bike rack so as to avoid any interference between the rack and bumper. You will want to make sure your bike rack or the one you choose features a distance of greater than 7 inches from its hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack.

I have attached a link that will take you to our available selection of Class I compatible carriers that you can look through if needed. The Rhino-Rack 2 Bike Rack # RRRBC045 is a really nice option. This hanging-style carrier can secure 2 bikes of up to 33 pounds each. There is a distance of 8 inches from the hitch pin hole to the upright bar of the carrier, so there will be no fit issues with this and your vehicle.

We don't have any specific recommendations near you but any local mechanic or shop with a decent reputation will be able to handle this hitch install without an issue. I would just bring along the install manual that we have attached on the product page so they can provide a good estimate before you drop off the keys.
