To use the Thule Hullavator Pro Kayak Carrier and Lift # TH898 the vehicle must have a roof rack whose cross bars extend out past the rack's feet by 4- to 8-inches and which are spaced apart no less than 24-inches. A wider bar spread is preferred for kayak stability.

If you refer to the linked diagrams you'll see that this space is required to ensure the Hullavator makes no contact with the side of the vehicle. Almost any shape of roof rack bar will work, including factory bars, so long as the overall rack/roof have at least a 130-lbs weight rating.

The Hullavator itself weighs about 40-lbs and it has a 75-lb capacity for the loaded kayak. Gas struts eliminate the majority of lifting required to mount your kayak onto your roof rack which makes a yakking trip a lot more fun.
