Recommended Ball Mount for Towing and Bike Rack Use Simultaneously

going to put a bike rack weight of 40lbs and bike of 50lbs as an accessory to pull with trailer. trailer is 3500lbs with tongue weight of 350 lbs. the car is a jeep grand cherokee with 6200 lbs towing capaity and max tongue weight of 620 lbs. QUESTION: will the downward torque of the rack and bike going over bumps create to much downward pressure. to violate the max allowable tonque weight.

Expert Reply:

Going over bumps will not increase the tongue weight pressure, but it will give additional torque to your hitch. Because of that, many adapters like a dual hitch receiver will reduce the hitch's rated tongue weight capacity by 50%. However, if you use a ball mount like # D210 instead of the dual hitch receiver like # D-192 that capacity reduction does not happen because you won't have two moving parts.

With this ball mount the torque is not transferred to the hitch in the same way. It will be a good fit for your application.
