For your 2016 BMW X1, I the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13303 is a confirmed fit. For any non-trailer loads, Curt requires use of a stabilizing strap # 18050. If you don't want to be concerned with that, I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Matte Black Finish - Class III - 2" # e93KR which is rated for higher capacities and does not require a stabilization strap for bike racks or other accessories.

For your trailer wiring, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Connector # 118717. This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your BMW X1's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery. I've attached an article to assist.

For a ball mount, I recommend the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 5" Drop, 5-1/2" Rise - 10K - Black # BWTS10037B. This will give you an adjustable mount to tow multiple trailers level. It also has two integrated hitch balls to fit a 2 inch coupler or a 2-5/16 inch coupler. This ball mount has a really nice and clean looking stow away option that will protect your shins when not in use. I recommend using a hitch lock like # e98882 to protect your investment.
