Question:
Your site says the full size spare would have to be stored elsewhere with either the Curt or Drawtite hitches. Is there a hitch that would work with the spare in place?

For your 2017 Toyota Highlander that has a full sized spare, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class IV Max Frame Round Tube Receiver Hitch # DT65MR. This hitch is custom-fit for your vehicle and will allow your full size spare tire to remain stowed under the Highlander. I have attached an image that shows the hitch installed on your 2017 Highlander with the spare tire still in place.
This Class IV trailer hitch will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, although I also recommend checking the vehicle's capacity as listed in the owner's manual. You will just need to follow whichever capacity is lower, the vehicle's or the hitch. I have included an installation video on your Highlander that you can use for reference.
If you are looking to do any towing, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118449 if your Highlander does not have the factory tow package, or the Hopkins # HM11141825 if you do have the tow package. These are custom harnesses that will easily install a 4-Way connector at the rear of the vehicle for powering the trailer's signal lights.
To tow a trailer, you will also need a ball mount. I have attached an article that explains how to choose the right one for towing your trailer level, along with a link that will take you to our available selection.
