We can help you get your 2009 Smart ForTwo Cabriolet ready for flat towing behind your motorhome. For reference, the linked article on the basics of flat towing, as well as the two others that cover specific components, are a great place to start your towing prep. As always, it is a good idea to check your Smart owner's manual for details on flat towing. I checked an online edition and it covers this subject on page 204. Let's get going!
Starting with base plates for the Fortwo, we offer two options, Roadmaster # 52285-1 and Blue Ox # BX1987. Our installers who handle these parts day-in/day-out really like the Blue Ox gear so I tend to follow their lead; I suggest kit # BX1987. For a mating tow bar I suggest their Alpha model, part # BX7380 for its self-aligning design and because it includes the required safety cables.
Lighting/wiring options include harness kits and diode kits, all shown on the linked page. I suggest Roadmaster diode kit # RM-154 along with Quick Battery Disconnect # RM-766. You can use a wiring kit like # BX8861 to make connection quick and easy.
For a braking system for the Fortwo the best option is the Blue Ox Patriot part # BLU37TR, which installs using 12V outlet # RM-9332. The Patriot II is fully-portable, meaning you can move it to your next towed car without any hassle, and it features wireless operation for easy set-up. This and other more complex-install products are shown on the linked page.
You will also need a hitch/low high adapter to keep the connected tow bar level. This is important for good tow bar operation (to reduce the chance for the arms to bind up). The linked article will help you select the correct one.
If you have other questions or concerns, by all means reply via email and I'll be glad to assist further.
