Updated 09/18/2017 | Published 09/17/2017

Question:

Hello, Im looking for the best product to fit a 2016 Equinox, with factory side rails and removable factory cross rails. 1 Loading a 12.5foot Touring paddle board, 31inch wide, 6inch thick, fibreglass, 40lbs. 2 I need some type of load assist. Wheels, roller, side load, etc. Currently using foam blocks and tie down straps. 3 IF POSSIBLE I would like to be able to open the hatch when board is loaded. 4 Nose forward load if using rollers. Please help, there are so many options.

It sounds like you do want to replace the carrier. I recommend the Yakima SweetRoll, part # Y04074 is a kayak or SUP carrier that includes integrated rollers for the rear of the vehicle to assist in easily loading the SUP nose first onto the vehicle.

You'll notice that we have this labeled as a Kayak/SUP carrier. This is capable of carrying SUPs just fine as all four saddles are spring loaded and will adjust to the widest part of the loaded SUP or Kayak. I recommend since you're using this for a single SUP to set them closer together than you would for a kayak so the springs adjust flat for the SUP.

Finally, I'd recommend getting a set of the felt pads for the SweetRoll, part # Y08004080 as these are not included in the carrier kit and will help further protect your SUP while loading. You can get a second set of these for the rear saddles, though you'll have to cut them to fit the rollers.

I'd combine this with the Thule Waterslide Non-Skid Loading Mat, part # TH854, which adds a roll-up mat to the rear of your vehicle to let you better rest the SUP on the vehicle without damaging the Vehicle or the SUP as you load it. If you're not looking to change carriers, this is also a great option on its own for your current setup.

Using this in conjunction with the rollers on the SweetRoll, you should have a significantly easier time loading your SUP.

I've included videos of both of these parts so you can get an idea of how they work.
