Recommended Trailer Ladder Rack for Transporting 100-lb Canoe

Updated 08/16/2017 | Published 08/14/2017

Question:

Good morning! I have a 15.6 foot flatback canoe that weighs about 100 lbs. I want to put it on my 10x6 trailer. Do you sell adaptors to screw into the trailer to hold a wide, heavy canoe? These would be like racks you screw into the top of your vehicle to hold kayaks but instead screwed into the metal of your trailer. Thanks!

We can help you with a solution for carrying your 15-foot canoe on the roof of your trailer.

Rack 'Em offers their Fitz-All heavy-duty extruded aluminum ladder rack # RA-28 which offers a 400-lb weight capacity but which itself weighs only about 20-lbs. Stainless steel mounting hardware is included. This rack fits trailers that have a rain gutter. With it you can use two of their Load Stop kit # RA-28-S to secure the canoe from moving.

A lower-cost option is the Swagman Roamer LT Roof Rack # S80510 which has a 150-lb capacity. This uses square load bars that can be cut to your preferred length.

With either rack you will want to install it with a 5 or 6-foot spread to best distribute the canoe's weight load across the trailer roof. A wider stance for the rack will also give your canoe more stability. You may also want to cushion the canoe by using foam blocks on the rack bars, such as the Malone foam block part # MPG172, which is 24-inches long.

You will also need some tie-down straps like # EM34410 to secure the canoe.
