Question:

I recently purchased the Derale D13502 transmission cooler for my 2009 Ford Explorer. When I removed the front grille and bumper cover, I realized there was already a factory transmission cooler installed. Can I install the Derale as a secondary cooler? If so, should I connect to the return line coming out of the radiator using the Derale part# D13025 fittings? Couldn’t I also just splice into the return line coming out of the factory transmission cooler?

Yes, the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit w/Barb Inlets part # D13502 can be used as an additional transmission cooler for your 2009 Ford Explorer. I recommend placing the cooler after the factory transmission cooler (radiator).

Yes, you will want to use the male barb fitting in the Derale Radiator Adapter Fittings for Ford, Lincoln and Mercury part # D13025 for this.

1) Disconnect the return transmission cooler line from the radiator.

2) Install the male D13025 fitting onto radiator.

3) Carefully route the looped hose from male D13025 fitting to the new cooler.

4) Using the supplied Hose Clamp, cut hose and attach new cooler.

5) Route the remaining hose to the disconnected transmission line and cut hose to length

6) Using the supplied Hose Clamp and female D13025 fitting, attach and tighten to the transmission
