Question:

I have an older 97 Maxum steel trailer single axle no tandem, want to add disc breaks on it. Never serviced or changed the drum shoes. I recently ordered a new Demco 8605001 actuator that replaces the old Dico 60 one. Didnt use the boat all that much, but when i serviced it earlier this week the master cyl was toast with crud and no break fluid inside. The Demco is for drum breaks. So what is the cheapest option you have for me and do I need a different actuator, what about the solenoid for reverse lockouts mine didnt have one? I see one at 187 with E-Coat is that good enough if I want to take it on the Ocean? Thanks

First, for the actuator that you have purchased, # 8605001, you can replace the drum master cylinder with Replacement Master Cylinder w/ Bypass Electric Lockout for Demco Actuators - Disc Brakes Item # DM5918. It will fit in place of the master cylinder you have and it comes with an electric reverse lockout.

For disc brakes I recommend replacing not only the brakes but the lines as well. If there is crud in the master cylinder then it is probably in the lines so replacing the lines will be important as well.

To determine the best disc brakes for your trailer I will need to know the inner and outer bearing numbers stamped into the sides of the bearings. I also need to know the wheel bolt pattern.

E-Coat is not the best option for salt water environments. For salt water I recommend dacromet or stainless steel. E-coat is one step up from raw steel finishes so in the long term it won't hold up to salt water.
