Question:
I want to buy your bike rack # S 64670. I need to know the best hitch for my Toyota Rav 4 2016. I wont be towing anything else with this hitch, just need it for 2 bikes. I want something that doesnt stick out too far. should I also get the lock mechanism so the hitch does not get stolen? Great site you have I have become very well informed so thank you for that! I guess I need a mechanic to install the hitch, correct?

For your 2016 Toyota RAV4, I recommend the Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch # C13149. This is a Class III trailer hitch that will provide a tongue weight capacity of 525 pounds. The reason I recommend a higher capacity trailer hitch for your RAV4, even though you do not plan on using it for anything other than a bike rack, is because of the 2 inch receiver opening it provides. This will open the door for many more hitch-mounted accessory options such as bike racks and cargo carriers. The 1-1/4 inch receiver opening that lower class/rated trailer hitches provide will limit these options.
When installing this trailer hitch on your 2016 Toyota RAV4, we measured a distance of 3-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper. This was the largest measurement between the Class III trailer hitches confirmed to fit your vehicle, meaning it is a bit more tucked behind the rear bumper and not protruding out as much as the alternatives.
If you do not feel comfortable installing the trailer hitch yourself, a qualified auto shop can do this without an issue. If you would like to do this yourself, I have included the written details and the installation video on your vehicle that you can use for reference. All of the necessary hardware is included.
Finally, the Swagman XTC-2 2-Bike Platform Rack # S64670 mentioned in your question is a really nice option and will work well with this hitch and your RAV4. It can hold up to 2 bikes and will secure them at 3 different points. I do recommend adding the anti-rattle hitch lock and cable # S64031 to secure the carrier to your vehicle and your bikes to the carrier.
I have also included a video demonstration on this bike rack for you to check out.
