Troubleshooting a Short in Trailer Wiring Harness on 2012 Chrysler Town and Country

Question:

Ive had the curt wiring harness installed on my 2012 Chrysler Town and Country for a couple years now. Just recently I noticed my driver side tail light and running light were not working. I thought it was odd that 2 different bulbs went at the same time and I was correct it was not the bulbs but a blown fuse. I swapped the fuse and all seem good until it blew again. With the harness disconnected the fuse is fine, with the harness connected it blows right away. I am guessing there is a short in the harness somewhere. What is the best way of tracking it down to fix? Also what is the box in the harness for and why does it need a direct tap from the battery. My 2000 wrangler had 1 t-connection and that was it. Thanks for your help.

The converter box on the Curt Wiring Harness, part # C56331 is to protect the wiring of your 2012 Chrysler Town and Country in the event of a short. Which is exactly what it sounds like you have. Some vehicles do not need the powered converter.

To determine the source of your issue you'll need to determine if it's on the vehicle or trailer side. Does the fuse blow with the harness connected to the van but no trailer plugged in? If so the issue is on the van. If you need to plug in the trailer it's likely on the trailer.

Once you know which side it's on inspect the trailer connectors for any corrosion. Clean if needed. If they're both clean you'll need to inspect the wiring following it back to the point of the light on the trailer or where the harness plugs into the van. Look for any damage or pinched wires. Often the wire that was ran to the front of the van is the one damaged because it was placed too close to a moving part of the vehicle.

Also inspect the connector on the van where the harness plugs into the factory wiring. Clean here if needed as well.

If you still can't determine the issue let me know and we'll keep troubleshooting.
