Since you already replaced the light on your trailer, the next step that I recommend taking is testing the wiring harness at the rear bumper of your 1986 Dodge Pickup. You can use a Circuit Tester, like part # PTW2993, to do so. You can also try hooking up a different vehicle to your trailer to see which end is causing the problem.
If you have a 4-Way wiring harness then you will want to check the Yellow wire. If you have a 7-Way then you will want to check the pin in the 9 o'clock position. If you are getting a signal at the left turn pin then you will need to move on to your trailer's wiring. If you do not get a signal, you will need to check the wiring on your Dodge.
To check the wiring, on either your truck or the trailer, you will want to look for any corroded, bent, or exposed wiring. You can also use the tester that I mentioned earlier, part # 3808, to check different sections along the wiring.
If you find any places where the wiring needs to be replaced, you can use 16 Gauge Wire, part # 16-1-1, along with some Butt Connectors, part # DW05744-5, to do so.
If you cannot find any places where the wiring looks like it needs to be replaced, just let me know and I can help you troubleshoot further.
I also attached a helpful article that might help you with your wiring.
