Is Trailer Weight Capacity a Combination of Both Axle Weight Capacities

Question:

In other words, if I have a dual Axel trailer, both axels measuring 3inches in diameter, does that mean my trailer is rated for 14,000 lbs? Many thanks for any advice.

Yes, the weight capacity of your trailer will be the weight capacity of all of your axles combined whether you have single, double (tandem), or triple axles.

Even though the common axle capacity for a 3 inch diameter axle is 6,000 - 7,200 lbs, you will still need to check your axle for a sticker or stamp that states the actual capacity. The common axle capacity is just that, common, there are other possible axle situations out there as well. You will want to check for any indications as to what your axle capacity is, or contact the manufacturer, before loading the trailer so as to not go over the weight capacity.

Another way to help determine your axle capacity is to use the size of various components such as your hubs, bearings, or spindles, to compare them to common known sizes.
