Trailer Brakes Lock Up After Installing Tekonsha Push to Test Breakaway System
Published 03/14/2017 >
Question:
I hooked up the PS50 controller to my trailer, as per the instructions, and the brakes activated instantly and will not release. I disconnect the blue brake wire and they release. this is with the system in release position. checked continuity and circuit was correct. replaced wiring to brakes, to be sure, and still locks up. the other controller I purchased from you is working fine different brand. I have NOT hooked the vehicle to the trailer as of yet. can you please tell me what is going on!!! done a lot of trailer wiring and never had this before. is this a normal function of this controller? did I screw up or is controller bad? I would appreciate some help. very happy with your products just kind of nuts at the moment

It sounds like either the power wire for the battery is running to the brakes instead of to the switch or the pin that is in the switch of system # PS50-85-320 is pulled allowing the circuit to be completed which would send power to the brakes and lock them up.
I have always found the installation instructions for this kit to be a bit confusing considering all of the diagrams in them, linked for reference. On the main unit the white wire is ground, blue connects to brake circuit from the trailer connector, and black goes to one of the switch black wires. The other switch black wire continues to the trailer brakes. If that is how you have it and the brakes are locking up make sure the pin is inserted all the way into the switch. If they still lock up then something is amiss inside one of the components and the system will need to be replaced.
