Question:

I need to install a hitch on a 2011 Buick Lacrosse CXS to haul a 4 bike rack. I saw that the Curt hitch requires the use of stabilizing straps for the bike rack. Are stabilizing straps required on the Drawtite hitch #36503. I was surprised that the Curt would be the only one that would require the straps when their specification for tongue weight exceeds the other two hitch manufacturers tongue weight specification.

Some companies prefer to be more cautious with their product ratings than others. Curt requires the use of stabilization straps, # 18050, on all of their Class I and II trailer hitches, regardless of tongue weight capacity, in accordance with their warranty requirements. The Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch trailer hitches do not require a strap, but a strap can still be used and would not be a bad idea in any application using a larger bike rack.

I would recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch, # C12115, if the extra 50 pounds of tongue weight capacity is something you will need. If you plan on only using the hitch for carrying a bike rack, I recommend the Draw-Tite # 36503. I have included links to the installation instructions for all hitches (Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch share the same instructions).

If you need a recommendation for a compatible bike rack, I would go with the Swagman Trailhead, # S63380. With it, you get a lot of great features like anti-sway cradles, anti-rattle pin and clip, and the ability to tilt and fold, in a very cost effective package.

If you plan on doing any towing, each of the trailer hitches for your 2011 Buick Lacrosse comes with the recommended ball mount. With those, you can use ball # 19256 (1-7/8 inch diameter) or # 19258 (2 inch diameter). For trailer wiring, you would need a 4-Way # 56098.
