Question:

Hello, I have a 2015 Dodge Durango Citadel AWD that I would like to tow behind my Ventana. Can you please let me know all the parts I would need to do this? I would need the tow bar, wiring, brake controller, etc. Thanks.

To flat tow a vehicle behind a motorhome, safely and legally, requires a few components. These include a tow bar, high/low hitch adapter, safety cables, a lighting/wiring solution of one kind or another, and base plates and a braking system for the towed car. Each of these is discussed in the linked article on the basics of flat towing, and the other two articles deal with hitch adapters and braking systems specifically. A review of these resources is a great place to start.

I can offer a general suggestion that sticking with one maker of tow bar and base plate tends to make life easier; mixing brands means having to add adapters, increasing your set-up's cost and complexity, and potentially degrading the handling of the whole system.

Starting with base plates, I suggest the Blue Ox kit # BX2411 which will work on your AWD Durango so long as it does not have the brush guard installed. For a compatible tow bar you can use the Blue Ox motorhome-mounted Alpha # BX7380 which includes safety cables, saving you that one expense.

Wiring/lighting kits come in many types, some requiring you to cut into the vehicle's wiring, others remaining completely separate electrically, such as the easy-install magnetic lights like # TL21RK. I like magnetic tow lights for their non-invasive installation and the fact that they can easily be replaced if necessary. They are also quite cost-effective.

For a supplementary braking system for the Durango it is hard to beat the wireless and portable Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. This proportional braking system is a snap to install and it will slow your Durango right along with the motorhome's rate of deceleration for less of that tug-of-war feeling.

For a high/low hitch adapter please refer to the article and to the linked page that displays all such adapters. Keeping your tow bar close to dead level (no more than 3-inches high or low at either end) is important for good handling and safety. For instance, if you need 10-inches of rise or drop to level your Alpha tow bar you can use part # BX88132 which is among the adapters shown on the linked page.
