Weight Distribution and Sway Control Recommendation for a 2007 Ford F-150 4x4

Updated 12/06/2010 | Published 12/05/2010

Question:

2007 F150 4X4 w/7200# tow package. I am going to pull an enclosed car trailer plus car. Total weight of about 8000lbs. Will I be happier with a Suspension Enhancement Product or with a Weight Distribution w/ sway control hitch? What can you recommend?

If your 2007 Ford F-150 is rated for 7,200 pounds, I cannot recommend that you tow the 8,000 pound trailer and car. Adding weight distribution and/or suspension enhancement will not increase the towing capacity of the vehicle. However, if you check the owners manual for the towing capacity, it may state that the truck can be used with weight distribution. If that is the case, then it should provide another capacity when using weight distribution which may be higher.

If it is higher and ends up being greater than 8,000 pounds, I would recommend using a weight distribution system with sway control. When choosing a weight distribution system, you will want to go by the tongue weight of the trailer loaded and ready to tow. A trailers tongue weight is usually 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. At 8,000 pounds, you are looking at 800 to 1,200 pounds.

With that amount of tongue weight I recommend the Strait-Line Weight Distribution w Sway Control, # RP66130. This system will encompass your trailers tongue weight and it has a 15,000 pound capacity. It also comes with dual-cam sway control which stops trailer sway before it starts. You will just need the correct shank, # RP54970, and a properly sized ball like # 63840.

I have included a link to the installation details for this system below. I have also included a link to an FAQ article on weight distribution and sway control.
