Question:
Good morning. I have a 2015 Ford Explorer Listed with Hankook P255/50R20 tires. Ca law requires you to have tire chains and the Ford manual recommends not to use chains on this size tire so I am quite confused on this topic. I am sure the concern is clearance issues. What chains would you recommend for the 2015 Explorer? thanks,

I looked up your owners manual online and unfortunately see the conflict. The law requires them and the manufacturer won't warranty the use of them. I'll give you my recommendation for the best chains with the least amount of clearance required, as I believe that is the issue here.
I recommend the 2015 Ford Explorer Thule Standard Snow Tire Chains - Diamond Pattern - D Link - XB16 - Size 265, # TH01571265. These chains are also manganese nickel alloy steel chains with integrated rubber tensioners that let you control the fit of your chains. They have color-coded connection points to make them easier to install on your vehicle. These chains require 16 mm of internal clearance.
Cable chains are typically lower profile but offer less traction than link chain options. The Titan Chain Cable Snow Tire Chains - Ladder Pattern - Steel Rollers - 1 Pair, # TC3010. These chains are made of low-carbon steel and require manual installation and adjustment. These chains require tubber adjusters like the Titan Chain Multi-Arm Rubber Tire Chain Adjuster for Light Trucks - 1 Pair, # TCMA2.
Another option is the ISSE Hybrid Snow Socks - Size 74 - 1 Pair, # TCH74, which offer traction on snow and ice but cannot be used on bare roads.
