Compatibility of Special Trailer Tire Sizes with 16-Inch Aluminum Wheels

Published 12/02/2016

Question:

I was looking to upgrade my tires on my fifth wheel camper after having 2 blow outs in one day. My question is I have 10 ply tires on aluminum wheels will a 14 ply G rated tire work on my rims ?

The things that are most critical to trailer tire performance and durability are 1) proper inflation 2) observance of the tire's rated load capacity and 3) observance of the tire's speed rating. If either of these factors is off the mark then the tire will tend to overheat and heat is what usually causes trailer tire failure.

It is perfectly fine to use a tire that is over-rated for the application, say using a load range G tire when an F-rated one would suffice. This tends to result in a lower operating temperature which again, generally speaking, is always a good thing when we're talking about special trailer tires. Cooler-running tires typically last longer. And there is really no down-side to using a higher-weight-rated trailer tire. Naturally, you just want to make sure your wheel size is compatible with your choice of tire size.

The Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire you referenced, part # TTWPRG235R16, is rated for Load Range G, which is 4400-lbs @ 110-psi cold tire pressure. This tire size will fit on 16-inch trailer wheels of several widths: 6, 6-1/2, 7 and 7-1/2-inches. If your 16-inch aluminum trailer wheels are one of these widths then you certainly can use this tire.

Do please note that trailer tires should ALWAYS be inflated to their maximum rated cold psi pressure as noted on the tire sidewall. It is NEVER appropriate to under- or over-inflate a trailer tire for any reason.
