Question:
Hello, I am looking at getting a trailer hitch for my 2016 Tacoma. My main issue is I do not know everything I need! There is obviously the receiver hitch, but I see other things like wiring and brake controllers. What is everything I would need?

I'm happy to help you get what you need to tow with your 2016 Toyota Tacoma. As you mentioned, we need to start with the trailer hitch. For your application, I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III, # C13264. This receiver has an easy bolt on installation that doesn't require any drilling. This will be an extremely sturdy hitch with a 2 inch x 2 inch receiver opening.
Next, we will need a ball mount. I recommend the Curt Channel Style Adjustable Ball Mount, # C45900. This ball mount comes with a 2 inch and 2-5/16 inch hitch ball and is adjustable to a 5-1/4 inch rise or a 6 inch drop to allow you to tow your trailer safe and level. This ball mount is adjustable in in inch increments. You may be interested in a lock set for your pins like # C23556 to secure your ball mount to your hitch and hitch ball to your mount.
For your wiring, we will start with the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56349, to get a 4-way flat connection. This harness will clip into the factory system without splicing needed and then you will run the power wire to the battery. This will protect your electrical system in your truck and ensure you are getting the power needed to your trailer. Then we will use the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat, # ETBC7. This will give us the connection to your new 4 way, and then we will connect the reverse function which will splice in and run the included wires for power and brake controller. This kit includes the instructions as well as all the wiring, circuit breakers, and connections needed. I've attached a video of this installation for you as well.
For a brake controller I recommend we use the Tekonsha Prodigy P3, # 90195. This brake controller is a proportional controller which will apply the same amount of force to your trailer brakes as you apply in your truck. It has a very easy to read LCD screen that takes the guess work out of the mix. It runs constant diagnostics and you won't have to decipher any codes. It offers three different boosts as well to meet your towing needs.
This is everything you need to get your 2016 Tacoma ready to tow.
