Drop Shank Recommendation for 2-1/2 inch Hitch Using Equalizer Weight Distribution System

Question:

I had a 2014 Ram 1500 with Class IV Equalizer weight distribution hitch. My travel trailer is about 6500 lbs fully loaded with a 700-750lb tongue load. My Ram had a 10,000 lb towing capacity and 1100lb tongue limit. The Equalizer made it very easy to tow. I recently upgraded to a 2015 Ram 2500 6.7 diesel. It is a Class V receiver with a 17,000 lb towing capacity and 1700 lb tongue limit. My existing Equalizer hitch is Class IV and is too small. It might also be to short to down low enough to have the trailer be level. Before I invest in a Class V shank and reset my Equalizer setup, do I even need a weight distribution hitch to tow my 7000 lb trailer with the Ram 2500? I would think I can just tow from simple ball hitch and probable anti-sway setup? Thanks!

You may not necessarily need a weight distribution system with your new truck as it looks like your trailer weighs less than half of the overall towing capacity of your truck but it would only help. Since you have the system already you may try towing with it and without to see if you feel it's worth using.

The largest drop shank we have for an Equalizer system that fits a 2-1/2 inch hitch is the part # EQ90-02-4900 which will allow you up to 6 inches of drop. I attached a help article that covers how to pick the correct drop ball mount for a weight distribution system.
