I checked with Tekonsha, and you would be able to use a plug-in brake control wiring adapter, part # 3040-P, to make the install of the brake controller on your 2010 Toyota 4Runner very simple. You should find the factory brake controller harness underneath the dash and to the left of your steering column, near the emergency brake pedal. This harness will have a 5-pin connector that will mate up to the plug on the # 3040-P wiring.
If you do choose to hard wire the unit, the Primus brake controller includes a pigtail with four wires, which you would connect as follows. The colors you mention do not match our information on the Toyota factory wiring colors, so I would recommend using a light tester like part # PTW2993 to determine which of your factory wires control which function and connect the wires from the # TK90160 brake controller pigtail accordingly.
White: Ground, attached to the vehicle negative battery terminal.
Black: 12v lead, attached to the vehicle positive battery terminal with a 20amp or 30amp circuit breaker, included in the # ETBC7 kit.
Blue: Electric brakes, this wire runs from the front of the vehicle back to the 7-Way plug.
Red: Stoplight switch, this wire would have a power reading when the brake controller is pressed, but would have none when it is released.
Please let me know if your vehicle did not come with a trailer connector in the rear and I would be glad to make some suggestions for you. I am also including links to additional information on wiring for a brake controller and a typical installation video for the # 3040-P brake control wiring adapter.
