Ball Mount to Allow Towing & Carrying a Scooter on a Hitch-Mount Carrier

Published 09/23/2016

Question:

Hello, I am looking for a towing solution to be able to carry a Vespa Scooter weights about 250 ibs and a small trailer that weights about 550 lbs with a tongue weight of about 100 lbs. I drive a Toyota Tundra with a hard sided Tonneau cover....so I need to be able to put the scooter and trailer on a single hitch. I have seen the MaxTow Dual hitch extender, but I am not sure that upper piece can handle a 250 lb scooter. Do you recommend any other products for this ? Thanks.

The dark side of hitch adapters is that they cause a 50-percent reduction in your hitch capacity.

A better solution is the Curt Multipurpose Ball Mount # D210 since this also offers a 2-inch upper receiver but it does NOT cause you to lose any hitch capacity. It also offers a 750-lb tongue weight (TW) rating that is plenty for the combined TW of the scooter/carrier plus the 100-lbs of TW from your trailer and the integral ball mount will accept a 1-inch shank hitch ball for towing.

The etrailer Motorcycle Carrier # e98873 has plenty of capacity for your 250-lb Vespa and since it weighs only 58-lbs it will be easy to handle.
