Can the Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch # HM20060 be Used with a Trailer Battery
Updated 10/01/2010 | Published 09/29/2010 >
Question:
Hello- I have a Coleman popup camper that has a battery. The battery is charged via the tow vehicle. I would like to get a breakaway switch that does not have its own battery since I already have one that will be maintained. Can I use this switch with my existing battery? Thanks

Yes, you can use the Hopkins LED Breakaway Switch, # HM20060, with your existing trailer battery as long as the battery is a 12 volt and can power the trailer brakes at or above DOT specifications. On the switch, the black wire will be connected to the positive trailer battery terminal, the white wire will be grounded to the trailer frame or to the negative battery terminal. The blue wire will attach to the electric brake wiring.
In some states, a break away system is required by law to have its own dedicated battery. Check with state and local regulations to see if your area has such a law.
