What Will I Need to Carry a Mountain Bike on the Roof on a 2006 Jeep Liberty with Factory Side Rails

Updated 09/27/2010 | Published 09/26/2010

Question:

I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty that has roof railings on the top that just run parallel to the car, but nothing vertical. What do I need to be able to load a bike up top? I just purchased my first mountain/trail bike.

In order to load a bike on top of your 2006 Jeep Liberty you will first need the Thule Roof Rack For 2006 Jeep Liberty, parts # TH710401, and # TH711400. The # TH710401railing foot pack allows your factory rails to mount the Thule WingBars, part # TH711400. The WingBars also come in black # TH711420. Once both of these items attached to your roof rails you will be ready to mount a bike rack on your roof.

The roof mounted bike rack that the Thule fit guide recommends for your Jeep Liberty is the Thule UpRide Wheel-Mount Bike Carrier - Roof Mount, part # TH599000.

Considering how tall your Jeep Liberty is and how that might make it difficult to load and unload your bike another option for you to consider would be a spare tire mount bike rack such as a Yakima SpareTime 2 Bike Carrier - Spare Tire Mount, part # Y02598. It would make loading and unloading easier and it comes with all the hardware necessary to haul your bike.
