Recommended Weight Distribution W/Sway Control For 2016 Airstream International Serenity

Updated 06/02/2016 | Published 05/31/2016

Question:

I have a 2016 Airstream International Serenity 23 FB, with a spec hitch weight of 467. My Touareg has a hitch weight capacity of approx. 750. I have used an equalizer in the past, but I am concerned it might be too stiff or ridgid. I am considering the Reese Strait Line system. Do you think this setup would put less stress on the hitch receiver? It seems to me that adding the chain hookup would add some flex to the setup. What do think and do you have any other recommendations? Thanks.

When choosing a weight distribution system you want the gross tongue weight to fall near the middle of the range of the tongue weight capacity for the weight distribution system.

I would guess the 467-lb you said your Airstream has is the dry weight. You want to use the tongue weight of the trailer when it is loaded and ready-to tow. Then add the weight of any cargo you place behind the rear axle on your Touareg such as coolers, food, camping gear. Many people like to estimate that weight to be around 200-lbs. You want to be pretty close on your tongue weight because weight distribution rated too high will cause a stiffer, uncomfortable ride while a system rated too low will not do the job and is essentially useless.

By the time you get the trailer ready to tow you may find the Reese Strait-Line, part # RP66083 is a system that would work great for you. It has sway control included which helps keep the trailer straight when in high winds or when large trucks pass by. This system is designed for tongue weight between 400 and 800 lbs.

The system does require a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch shank. For a 2-inch ball I recommend part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch hitch ball I recommend part # 19286.
