looking to find out the color of the dome light wire in the harness/cluster by the brake pedal for lighting up running boards when the door is opened on a 2016 chevrolet duramax 3500 crew cab

Your best option is to test the wires you have found using a circuit tester such as # PTW2993. If you alternate the dome light on and off while testing, you can identify the correct wire.
It is also possible to tie into the switch at the door that allows the dome light to come on when the door is opened.
And a third option is if the dome light is on its own fuse, you could tap in at the fuse location as well. But if the dome light shares a fuse with anything else then the running board lights would come on when that circuit is energized.
