According to the directions it states that on the Chevy Equinox, it is necessary to remove the panel at the center of the fascia (this is a pre cut section within the bumper) to provide space for hitch installation. This will not be reinstalled after the hitch is mounted into place. It also states that if you have tie downs present these will also need to be permanently removed for installation of the Curt # C12291 hitch.
The directions make no mention about loosening the muffler or the actual bumper to install the trailer hitch.
We have a video of this hitch being installed on a 2015 Chevy Equinox, I have linked it to this page for your convenience.
