Does Pin Box Mounting Plate Have to be Drilled to Install Convert A Ball part # CAB-C5GX1216

Updated 05/05/2025 | Published 03/11/2016

Question:

If I buy the CAB c45x1216 How do I drill into the trailer. See attached. Does the hitch part on the trailer come apart? Or do you drill larger pilot holes on the top piece and stick socket through whole? John

Actually to install the Convert A Ball Adapter part # CAB-C5GX1216 on your trailer you don't have to drill any holes in the pin box plate. Convert-A-Ball states that they guarantee that the adapter will stay in place without drilling holes, but if you would rather drill the holes you can.

You would have to be able to access the inside of the pin box to get the hardware through the holes so most opt to not drill the holes.

Jameson, if you watch the video imbedded into the page it specifically states that you must bolt the adapter to your king pin to prevent it from swiveling on the king pin.

@RogerT This is an older page that has an older set of instructions attached to it. The video also is going with the most permanent install solution to be the absolute safest.
